About: Our Quiet-Watch Principles

FeedSafariTickScn is an independent guide for people who watch wildlife from their own gardens, yards and windows. We write as neighbours, not experts on a stage.

Why this site exists

Affordable trail cameras, nest-box cameras and identification apps have brought wildlife watching into millions of homes. That is wonderful — and it brings new temptations: to move closer, to bait, to open a nest box, to share a location. We wanted a calm, practical resource that puts the animal's comfort first and treats honest observation as a skill worth practising.

Our guides are static reading material prepared by a small independent editorial team. We do not host user accounts, live forums or member submissions. Example discussions on this site are clearly labelled illustrations of good practice.

The principles

  • Distance first. If an animal changes its behaviour because of us, we are too close.
  • No luring for a shot. No bait placed purely for filming, no call playback, no rearranged vegetation.
  • Nests are off-limits. We never encourage approaching, opening or filming active nests outside licensed schemes.
  • Habitat before hardware. Cover, water, native plants and corridors come before any camera upgrade.
  • Honest notes. Uncertain identifications are welcome; inflated ones are not.
  • Protect locations. Sensitive sites stay private.

We'd rather publish a blurry, honest frame than a sharp one that cost an animal its peace.

How we write

We draw on published guidance from organisations such as the RSPB, the British Trust for Ornithology, the Mammal Society, Hedgehog Street, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, and on standard field guides. We are not affiliated with any of them, nor with any camera brand. We don't accept payment for product placement. Where laws are mentioned, we summarise them; always check the current rules where you live.

Spotted an error? Tell us. Corrections are part of honest observation too.

Watch closely. Leave wildlife undisturbed.
